The Glattalbahn is a multi-modal transit network serving the Zurich Airport region, connecting airport, commercial, residential, and landscape infrastructure across the Glatt Valley. Within this corridor, Flughafen Zürich AG’s Glatt Revitalization Project will transform a 3.25 km canalized section of the River Glatt between Opfikon and Rümlang into a naturalized waterway by 2028. As part of the masterplan, numerous micro-elements will be distributed throughout the restored river landscape as a repeatable architectural system.
The inital design scope consists of three prototypes developed to support varied service requirements — from rest areas to utility and infrastructure nodes. The structures designed to be extremely compact and low-impact, using CLT panels for the superstructure and interiors to support clean detailing, efficient assembly, and a direct material relationship to the ecological setting. Insulated assemblies and green roofs are incorporated for durability and environmental performance. Channel glass provides a luminous facade element, integrating color, signage, and identity. Green illumination establishes a recognizable Glattalbahn language while giving the prototypes a softer nighttime presence within the landscape.
My role as design consultant focused on the architectural and technical logic of the system: facade and enclosure strategy, material integration, detail refinement, and detailed construction illustrations and renderings used to test, communicate, and advance the design as a repeatable product.
