The East Harbour Transit Hub (EHTH) is a multi-modal transit station serving as an gateway to one of Canada’s largest planned Transit-Oriented Communities and commercial developments. Located in the Riverdale neighborhood of Toronto, it was designed to accommodate a daily ridership of 100,000. The design consists of two elevated island platforms over a grade-level retail and ticketing concourse. Three rail lines serve local and regional transit and are covered by a single iconic platform canopy. Links to bus and subway lines are integrated into the site, as are cycling and pedestrian paths. Glazed perimeter walls at the ground-level concourse maximize daylight and allow transparency into and through the building. The canopy design emerged from strict site constraints and construction staging demands requiring train lines to provide continuous operation during construction. A lightweight PTFE tensile structure was developed as an elegant, cost-effective and efficient long-span solution - central support masts between the rail platforms carry the bulk of the weight, allowing for rapid installation with minimal perimeter structure. Daylight is diffused through the PTFE to create a soft, uniform illumination across the platforms and through to the concourse below.
