Located on a constricted, steeply sloping wooded site in upstate NY, the house was developed to minimize site impact and capitalize upon limited daylight access. Taking cues from the surrounding hemlocks, the house reaches vertically to maximize solar exposure during the low winter months. Daylight received through the high roof is redirected downward through floor voids into lower levels, providing a sense of expansion and connectedness despite the small footprint. Floor voids and a steeply pitched roof allow warm air to rise through the space and be exhausted or recirculated as needed. This seasonally moderates interior temperatures and reduces the demand for mechanical intervention. Large ground-level glazed openings provide fluidity between interior and exterior and further support stack ventilation.
